My journey to becoming a teacher began when I was five years old and entering the classroom of Mrs. Theda Mae Wall.
She was a remarkable teacher who made teaching look like it was not only fulfilling but also could be something I would enjoy
for the rest of my life. By the end of that school year I knew my place in this world was to teach.
This desire continued to blossom within me throughout my years of school. At the end of high school I went to a
renowned teaching college, Winthrop University, but was unable to continue my education there because of financial strains
within my family. Fast forward 13 years. I am now married, have 2 small children and have been a homemaker for 11 years. The
desire to teach is still within me. I decide there is no time like the present to go back to college in hopes of achieving
my goal to become a teacher. I began taking courses at the local community college and after 2 years I had obtained not just
an Associates in Arts degree but also an Associates in Science. I then applied with Berkeley County School District to become
a substitute teacher.
As a substitute teacher I was able to visit different schools and different grade levels which helped me to narrow
my field. It is during the two years that I was a substitute teacher that I realized my heart was with elementary and
middle school children. It is also during that time that I was offered multiple teacher assistant jobs. I decided that
I wanted to be a teacher more than just the assistant though and I continued on with my studies. I transferred to the College
of Charleston in August, 2008. I began as a junior taking my core curriculum to become a teacher. I have taken the Praxis
I and scored remarkably high on all three sections. I have taken the Praxis II in Middle School Social Studies and will be
taking the Middle School ELA and PLT within the next few months. My specialized content includes the areas of History
and English.
You will find some of my completed work within this website showing the principles and standards I am achieving
at the College of Charleston. Please continue to check back frequently as I will continue to update this portfolio with my
work as I continue my journey to becoming the teacher I always wanted to be.
